The MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is located on the waterfront in Belém, on Avenida Brasília, next to the historic Tejo Power Station and within walking distance of the Jerónimos Monastery and the Belém Tower.

This guide focuses on how to get specifically to the MAAT using public transport, without repeating what is already covered in ONDEBUS guides about Belém, Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower or Pastéis de Belém. At the end, you will also find links to those related articles.

Use ONDEBUS to get to the MAAT

In ONDEBUS you can type “MAAT Lisbon” or “Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology” or simply use the button below with the destination already filled in.

Use “Find my location” to automatically set your starting point.

1. Train (CP) — Cascais Line to Belém

For many visitors, the fastest and most reliable way to reach the MAAT is by using CP suburban trains – Cascais Line and getting off at Belém Station.

  • Line: Cascais Line (Cais do Sodré ⇄ Cascais)
  • Recommended station: Belém
  • Typical frequency: about every 20 minutes (may vary depending on the time of day)
  • Walking distance: 5–7 minutes to the MAAT along the waterfront

From Belém Station, use the pedestrian crossing or overpass to the river side and walk along Avenida Brasília towards the MAAT’s modern building, next to the old Tejo Power Station.

2. Tram 15E — direct connection from the city centre

The 15E tram connects Lisbon’s historic centre (Praça da Figueira / Terreiro do Paço) to Belém and Algés, passing very close to the MAAT.

  • Typical starting points: Praça da Figueira or Terreiro do Paço
  • Useful stops: Altinho (MAAT), Belém Ferry Terminal or other stops along the waterfront
  • Walking distance: around 5–10 minutes from the tram stop to the museum, always by the river

The 15E is very popular with tourists, so it can get crowded at peak times. If there are long queues, check on ONDEBUS whether it is faster to take the Cascais Line train from Cais do Sodré.

3. Carris buses to the MAAT

Several Carris bus routes stop on the riverfront, almost at the MAAT’s door.

  • 201 — night service (Cais do Sodré ⇄ Linda-a-Velha)
  • 714 — Praça da Figueira ⇄ Outurela
  • 727 — Roma-Areeiro Station ⇄ Restelo
  • 728 — Portela ⇄ Restelo (stop Altinho (MAAT))
  • 729 — Algés ⇄ Bairro Padre Cruz
  • 751 — Campolide Station ⇄ Linda-a-Velha

Look for stops such as Altinho (MAAT), MAAT / Belém Ferry Terminal or other stops on Avenida Brasília, which leave you just a few minutes’ walk from the entrance.

4. Carris Metropolitana and suburban buses

If you are coming from municipalities such as Amadora, Oeiras or Sintra/Cacém, some Carris Metropolitana routes get you very close to the Belém and Algés area, allowing you to finish the journey on foot or with a short connection by tram, train or urban bus.

In ONDEBUS, set your destination as “MAAT Lisbon” and check whether it is best to get off in Belém, Algés or another nearby stop, then walk along the riverfront.

5. Metro + connection to Belém / MAAT

There is no Metro station in Belém, so you will always need to connect to a train, tram or bus.

  • Cais do Sodré (Green Line)
    Cascais Line train to Belém
    or → 15E tram to Belém/Algés.
  • Terreiro do Paço (Blue Line)
    15E tram towards Belém/Algés.
  • Marquês de Pombal (Blue / Yellow Lines)
→ Metro to Cais do Sodré or Terreiro do Paço
→ then Cascais Line train or 15E tram.

If you are short on time, the combination Metro + Cascais Line train is usually faster and more predictable than the tram during rush hours.

6. Walking between the MAAT, Belém and the Tower

The MAAT is part of the main sightseeing “corridor” in Belém, making it easy to visit several attractions on foot.

  • Belém Station (train) → MAAT: about 5–7 minutes along the waterfront.
  • MAAT → Jerónimos Monastery: around 10–12 minutes on foot.
  • MAAT → Belém Tower: 15–20 minutes walking along the Tagus river.

The route is almost flat and offers beautiful river views, so it is perfect if you want to combine the museum with other monuments in the area.

7. Best option for tourists

  • Train (Cascais Line) — excellent if you are staying in the city centre (Cais do Sodré / Baixa) or along the coast.
  • Tram 15E — ideal if you want the classic tram ride between the city centre and Belém.
  • Buses 714 / 727 / 728 / 751 — good alternatives when the 15E is overcrowded.

If you also plan to visit the Jerónimos Monastery or the Belém Tower, use the MAAT as one of the stops on your riverside walk, enjoying the views and gardens along the way.

8. Recommended tickets

  • Zapping — very convenient if you plan to combine Metro, Carris, CP and Carris Metropolitana on the same day.
  • 24-hour ticket — worth it if you will be using public transport a lot in a single day (for example, city centre ⇄ Belém + other visits).
  • Navegante pass — ideal for residents or longer stays with daily travel.
  • Tap&Ride — useful as a last resort if you forget to top up your card; you pay directly on the validator with a bank card.
