Pena Palace is one of Portugal’s most iconic monuments and the most visited site in Sintra. Because traffic in the mountain area is restricted and parking is extremely limited, the best way to reach the palace is by using CP urban trains and the Scotturb tourist buses.

This guide explains exactly how to get to Pena Palace in 2025/2026 with the correct routes, tickets, schedules and where to buy them.

🚌 Tourist Buses to Pena Palace (Scotturb)

From Sintra Train Station, Scotturb operates two tourist routes dedicated to the mountain monuments:

🚍 434 – Pena Circuit

  • Sintra Station → Historic Centre → Moorish Castle → Pena Palace
  • Operates every day
  • Tourist ticket required (not included in Navegante)
  • Runs every 15–20 minutes in high season
  • The best and correct route to Pena Palace

🚍 435 – Palaces Route

  • Historic Centre → Quinta da Regaleira → Seteais → Monserrate
  • Useful if visiting multiple palaces in one day

ℹ️ Carris Metropolitana (Important!)

Some Carris Metropolitana buses — for example the 1253 — pass near the mountain area but do not go up to Pena Palace.

These are regular suburban routes and should not be used by tourists to reach the palace. The climb is steep, long, and does not reach the monument.

💳 Ticket Information (434 / 435)

  • Scotturb ticket office in front of Sintra Station
  • On board (depending on season)
  • Ticket machines in the historic centre

The 434 ticket is a tourist-specific ticket and is not included in Navegante or Zapping passes.
