The Jerónimos Monastery is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Lisbon’s most iconic monuments. It sits in the Belém district, right in front of the Praça do Império Gardens and near the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

This guide focuses strictly on how to get to the Jerónimos Monastery, without overlapping with our Belém or Pastéis de Belém guides.

1. Tram 15E — the classic way to get there

The 15E tram is the most popular and scenic way to go from central Lisbon to Belém.

  • Starting point: Cais do Sodré (Metro Green Line + Cascais train line)
  • Recommended stops: Mosteiro dos Jerónimos or Jerónimos
  • Walking distance: 2–3 minutes
  • Frequency: every ~8–10 minutes (can be crowded)

2. Carris buses stopping right by the Monastery

The following Carris buses stop almost at the door of the Jerónimos Monastery:

  • 728 — Restelo ⇄ Portela
  • 729 — Algés ⇄ Bairro Padre Cruz
  • 714 — Praça da Figueira ⇄ Outurela
  • 727 — Roma-Areeiro ⇄ Restelo
  • 732 — Marquês de Pombal ⇄ Caselas

3. Carris Metropolitana — ideal if you come from Amadora, Sintra, Oeiras

  • 1715 — Mira Sintra ⇄ Belém (via Algés)
  • 1714 — Amadora ⇄ Belém

Get off at any stop marked “Belém – Jerónimos” for the shortest walk.

4. Train (CP) — Cascais Line

This is the best option if you’re staying along the coastline (Cascais, Estoril, Oeiras, Carcavelos, Paço de Arcos, etc.).

  • Take the Cascais Line and get off at Belém station.
  • Walk 5–7 minutes to reach the Monastery.

5. Metro + transfer to Belém

The Metro does not go to Belém, so a transfer is required.

  • Cais do Sodré (Green Line) → tram 15E or buses 714 / 728 / 732
  • Terreiro do Paço (Blue Line) → tram 15E
  • Marquês de Pombal (Blue/Yellow Lines) → bus 732
